It is with great pride that we congratulate Jane Murdoch on her new position as Chair of the Scottish Chamber of Safety. SCoS was formed in 1952 as the coordinating body for the national safety groups that had arisen throughout Scottish Industry and has provided a strong voice for the safety profession for more than 65 years. Jane is a long term supporter of the Safety Groups movement, having been involved with SGWS for over 10 years. SCoS Awards 2017

The SCoS Awards are back and entries are requested from all organisations across Scotland. Previously limited to members of a safety group, the awards are now open to all businesses of any size based or operating in Scotland whether or not they are members of a Scottish Safety Group. Tremendous work is being done in raising the standards of health, safety and environment management in Scotland. IIRSM joint event

Phillip Pearson, newly appointed Chief Executive of IIRSM presented at our joint meeting with IIRSM members on the 20th November. Prior to his appointment, Phillip was Director of Membership at IIRSM. Previous appointments include Learning & Member Products Group Director at The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and Head of Member Services at the Chartered Institute of Taxation. Phillip has an MA in US Politics and Economic History. Phillip discussed his strategy for IIRSM and the plans and aspiration he has for the organisation. Save the Management Regs ACoP

Unfortunately, the Government plans to cut important guidelines that help employers to comply with health and safety laws. Organisations use the ‘Management of Health and Safety at Work Approved Code of Practice’ (ACoP) to manage risk and prevent accidents, injury, illness and death in the workplace. But the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) wants to replace this with non-approved guidance that lacks the same authority and assurance. This would be a mistake that could potentially cost lives, SHEF(S) and many others strongly urge the DWP to improve and retain this much-valued ACoP.
